Cable Cars served the Mornington line, up High Street and along Eglinton Road, from 1883 to 1957. The plan now is that, after an absence of over 60 years, the service will be reinstated, hopefully in the decade of the 2020s. Once again, the 'little matchbox cars' may delight visitors and locals, offering an experience that can be had in only one other city in the world (San Francisco, the original home of cable cars).
About Us
The Dunedin Heritage Light Rail Trust was formed with the aim of reinstating the Mornington cable car line. Currently (2020) four trustees serve, and they have the responsibility of planning the detail of how the service may be re-established, and of seeking the necessary funding.
The High Street Cable Car Society is a body formed to enable enthusiasts to support the project, and is open to public membership. An AGM is held in the latter part of the year; the rules of the Society may be seen at this link: Cable Car Society Rules 2018, and updated 2022.
