THE MORNINGTON CABLE CAR

Visit Us

The Interim Cable Car House on Eglinton Road at Mornington is open from time to time, and visitors are most welcome. We roll out the cars, and invite you to climb aboard, and admire the quality of the restorations, and we tell you about the project for reinstatement. Typically in 2019, we have been open from midday to 3 on weekends and Mondays, and at other days and times of the day according to the availability of volunteers. (If the weather is terrible, we usually don’t open.)

With the 2019-20 cruise ship season, Oct 1 through April 19, we will aim to be open on cruise ship days, as listed on the Port Otago website www.portotago.co.nz/marine-and-shipping/shipping-schedules/cruise-ship-schedule/, and depending upon availability of volunteers. Timing may be somewhat fluid, according to the cruise-shippers’ timetables, but the default position is 12-3.

Buses come from the city to Mornington, as per the map below, and the central city Bus Hub at the southern end of Great King Street (opposite the Police Station and the Countdown car park) is a convenient starting point. Bus 61 leaves Hub stop C half-hourly on weekdays, and hourly weekends; Bus 63 departs Hub stop F every 15 minutes on weekdays, and half-hourly on the weekend.

Private buses make themselves available for city tours to cruise ship passengers, and these may include a visit to the cable cars.
